PITT ALUM RIDDICK IN LINE TO REPLACE COLBERT AS STEELERS GM

We all as Pittsburgh Steelers fans were most likely in tears with the retirement of long time General Manager, Kevin Colbert. But we also know the saying..”All Good Things Must Come To An End.” And at those endings..always brings on new beginnings.

ESPN analyst Louis Riddick has been mentioned as one of the front-runners for the new General Manager for the Steelers. This becoming well known after the University of Pittsburgh alum and football player made his speech at the Pitt commencement ceremony on Sunday.

Riddick, called Pittsburgh draft “great”..but because he knew that some would make a connection between him and the general manager vacancy for which he has interviewed.

“It’s funny, I tried not to concentrate on their draft too much,” Riddick said with a grin. “Because I didn’t want anyone going, ‘Ah, look at him, I see what he’s trying to do.”

I completely understand what Louis is trying to say. He is saying if he spoke too much on the Pittsburgh Steelers draft, the media would try to put 2 and 2 together..only to come up with 5. Because let’s face it, that’s exactly what the NFL media does.

But Riddick, a safety from Pitt drafted in the 9th round of the 1991 NFL draft interviewed with the Steelers back in March. And is actually only one of four candidates not currently tied down with any other NFL franchise. Still..he kept “tight-lipped” on the entire situation.

“I can’t say very much,” Riddick said. “Simply because this is something that it needs to play itself out. Obviously, everyone knows what my connection is to [Pitt] and this city — what that would mean for me, what that would mean for my family and how it would be kind of like a full-circle moment for me.

“But we’ll just let this play out. Obviously, there are a lot of other good candidates. Mr. Rooney is someone who I don’t think anyone here has any lack of trust in making the right decision, and he’ll do just that. However it shakes out, it won’t change my connection to this city, this university and anything else that’s involved. We’ll see what happens.”

Riddick. 53, has 13 years of front office experience beginning with the then Washington “Redskins” Commanders back in 2001. He then rose to director of player personnel in 2005 to 2008, before joining the Philadelphia Eagles as a pro scout.

After being promoted to Director of Pro Personnel, General Manager Howie did not renew his contract in 2013. Since then, Riddick has moved into the media world, with the occasional report that a team is considering him to be its general manager.

In my opinion, someone with such NFL experience both on the field, as a scout, in the front office and as an analyst should get a second or third look as a General Manager in the National Football League. And being a Pitt alum and Pennsylvania native, Louis Riddick should fit right in with the Pittsburgh Steelers. #HereWeGo

“THE STANDARD IS THE STANDARD.”

We all know the names..Art Rooney, Dan Rooney, Mike Tomlin, Kevin Colbert and Art Rooney II..but how many Steelers fans know the name Dan Rooney Jr.?

Son of the late Daniel Rooney Sr, Jr started off as the ball boy for the Pittsburgh Steelers back in the 1970’s. Working his way up to work for now recently inducted Hall of Fame equipment manager, Tony Parisi. Dan Jr. then went on to work in the ticket office for a few months, before becoming a part of the scouting department in 1997.

Starting his scouting career with the pick of former Steelers guard and Hall of Famer, Alan Faneca out of Louisiana State University. Dan also scouted now Pittsburgh quarterback, Mitch Trubisky back in 2017 at the University of North Carolina. Believing that Trubisky brings that Black & Gold mentality on and off the field.

Almost 20 years before Trubisky, Dan Jr. had his eyes set on an undrafted running back out of UNC, “Fast” Willie Parker. An undrafted free agent back in 2004 who set history by busting out a 75 yard touchdown run in Super Bowl XL versus the Seattle Seahawks.

Now moving forward to present day. With the 2022 NFL Draft starting tomorrow, Rooney Jr. has mentioned certain quarterbacks the Steelers have focused on. Those quarterbacks being Pitt University’s Kenny Pickett, Liberty University’s Malik Willis(enjoyed dinner with him and his family), Ole Miss’s Matt Corral, Desmond Ridder at Cincinnati and UNC’s Sam Howell.

Notice in the video how Dan Rooney Jr emphasized on how he “Enjoyed dinner with Malik Willis and his family”? Did he mention that about any other of the quarterbacks? Nope.

Segway into the true topic of this blog. Yes, it is about the Unsung Scout, Dan Rooney Jr, who started from the bottom even as a part owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. But also to let you know that Malik Willis will be our draft choice in the 1st round. #HereWeGo

APRIL 16TH: Ohio State To Honor Dwayne Haskins

Photo created by steelersworld1.com

It’s been nearly three days and I still cannot get over the untimely death of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Which is why I continue to celebrate his life any chance I can get. And obviously I am not the only one to do so.

Buckeyes head coach, Ryan Day told reporters Monday morning that the football program will honor the late quarterback this Saturday during their Spring Game. An honor that is definitely well deserved.

Haskins died tragically when he was fatally struck by a dump truck in Florida early Saturday. He was 24 years old. Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud shows his dedication to Simba below.

Haskins, at age 11 knew that he was going to become a product of Ohio State. A video surfaced of him saying so while checking out the Buckeyes locker room. Courtesy of NBC Sports.

Even after the ill-timed, disrespectful Twitter comment by ESPN reporter, Adam Shefter and racist Dallas Cowboys employee, Gil Brandt..the NFL has still showed respect and admiration for a decent human being, who deserved more than what he was given.

So along with Ohio State, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Washington Redskins(Commanders)..Steelers World 1 honors DWAYNE HASKINS! A young man who lost his life way too soon. #HereWeGo
